Pass the gclid
A later upload can match the ad only when the tracker stored the click id from the address it saw. If that lander never carried it, Audience Optimization and an offline file both have an empty key.
Google's import setup requires auto-tagging, which is what appends the click id. Once the network approves, the upload steps live in Google Ads offline conversions. The form below builds the click side: the tracking template, or the final URL suffix, for the tracker you already run.
The string shows up here after you submit.
What a Google Ads tracking template is
The final URL is the page the ad opens. A tracking template is a separate pattern Google fills in on the click, and a final URL suffix is extra parameters stuck onto that landing page. You can save either one at the account level, the campaign level, or the ad group level.
Google's tracking template article describes parallel tracking: the visitor goes to the final URL while the template address loads in the background. The suffix article shows the same split. The person lands on the page with the suffix attached, and measurement runs behind that visit. In Google's illustration the visitor arrives at an address that already includes the suffix x=y.
Edits to a template take 24 to 48 hours to show up in serving. The setup article says a third-party click tracker should follow that provider's format. Voluum, RedTrack, and ClickMagick each publish their own.
ValueTrack parameters in the string
Google's ValueTrack list is the source for the two parameters the builder always treats as meaningful. The other four appear together in the worked example further down.
| Parameter | What the click receives |
|---|---|
| {lpurl} | Inserts the final URL. An account, campaign, or ad group template has to include a parameter like this one, or the click has nowhere to land. |
| {gclid} | The Google click identifier of the click that came from the ad. |
| Report set | {campaignid}, {adgroupid}, {keyword}, and {device}. Google's example template appends this set after {lpurl}. |
Worked example: the Google template
This is the tracking template example from the setup article. On a click, the four parameters are replaced with the campaign, the ad group, the keyword, and the device.
{lpurl}?campaignid={campaignid}&adgroupid={adgroupid}&keyword={keyword}&device={device}
A redirect through your tracker uses the same structure: an https address that still contains {lpurl}, with any extra parameters after it. Tick campaign, ad group, keyword, or device when you want those ValueTrack parameters added.
Voluum: suffix only, plain final URL
Direct tracking leaves your offer address in the final URL field. The traffic-source article says to paste only the parameters after the question mark into URL options. That article names {externalid} as the token for the Google click id.
The agency guide prints this final URL suffix. The campaign parameter is spelled campaigid in that example, and the cpid value is theirs, so replace it with the id from your campaign.
cpid=976d4dc5-d4d3-4881-aaf7-a9272fa3112e&gclid={gclid}&campaigid={campaignid}
If you submit a tracking template choice for Voluum, the form still returns this kind of query string. The integration article stores that click id under External ID, which is the value a later Google upload reads. Plan details are in the Voluum review.
RedTrack and ClickMagick
RedTrack's Google Ads page requires a custom tracking domain. Performance Max parameters go in the final URL suffix. Other campaigns use the tracking template field. The public page does not print the parameter string itself. Create the Google Ads traffic channel, then copy the campaign Tracking field into the form. The form rejects an http address, and it rejects a template that has no {lpurl}.
ClickMagick does not use that redirect pattern. Leave the advertised page in the final URL field. Auto-tagging supplies the click id, and the tracking code on that page reads it. The conversion article sends a Google conversion when the click carried gclid or wbraid, unless Enhanced Conversions is on and the click has an email or a phone number. Inbound and outbound network addresses are assembled in the postback URL builder. The ClickMagick review and the RedTrack review cover the plans.
Account level and campaign level
When several templates are saved, the most specific one is the one that serves. The order runs from the keyword, to the ad, to the ad group, to the campaign, and then to the account. An account template therefore covers every ad that does not have its own.
I would put one offer that is still being tested into the campaign field. I would use the account field when every campaign should carry the same parameters. The ad group choice sits between those two, for a set of ads that share a lander and should leave the rest of the campaign alone.
When the lander has no click id
The failure buyers describe is an id that shows on Google's redirect and is missing on the page the tracker records. A single-page app that reloads the landing URL and drops the query string does that. Anything else that strips parameters between the ad click and the script has the same result.
Keep every character, including its case. The import setup says the GCLID is case sensitive, so a lowercased copy will not match the click.
After the click is stored
Once the click row holds the id, the network postback can bring the payout back to that row, and the upload can send the payable sale. Voluum reads the id from External ID. RedTrack sends online and offline conversion data through its Google integration. ClickMagick uses the gclid or wbraid rule above.
If the approval lands days later, the late approval checker compares the click date with the day the sale becomes payable.
My take
I would open one stored click before I open the upload screen. If the id is missing, or its case was changed, the file has nothing to match, and the template is the piece to fix first.
